Think of us as a Camp within a Camp, we are the activity center for Camp Thunder!
The Fine Arts and Technology Department staff is almost a camp within a camp. We have a host of special projects for the camp community. Already you got your computerized class registrations from our Camp Computer Center which we operate. When you are not making your Dream Catcher or Leather Belt we invite you to consider our other programs which are described below:
Worship Service - We are the only summer camp in the entire Southeastern United States to send a Chaplain to BSA National Camp School in 1994. Our Sunday Vespers are at 8:30pm. Beginning Tuesday at 1:30 we sponsor a special training session your Troop's Chaplain Aid. This program called "The God Squad" is an honor unit event. The God Squad then puts on the Friday Night vesper service at 8:00pm. During the week the Chaplain is available to talk with your unit about religious award emblems and can arrange special worship services for many faiths. Already this summer we have had several Catholic Mass Services, A Mormon Worship Service and even have an on call Rabbi for Jewish scouts.
WBSA FM 95 Your lots of talk, granite rock, weather radio station! Tune into everyone's favorite radio station at Camp Thunder & get the traffic report from the nature trail, hear all of the latest commercial spots from the trading post, we'll play great scouting top 40 hits. At lunch on most days in the dining hall
CHESS TOURNAMENT - Check it out Mate! In cooperation with the Georgia Scholastic Chess Association we invite your top chess champion to contend for this exciting Honor Unit event held Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 - 5:40pm.
CAMP MEDIA CENTER - Over 130 training videos on topics from Orienteering to Edible Wild Plants plus a top selection of Blockbuster hits for movie night. Leader's are invited to see Ed to check out some of the titles and watch these videos at one of the four VCR units stationed around camp during the week for the Scoutmaster Merit Badge (req. # 9). We have a list of titles at the Center. Other popular selections include the entire Trials of Life Nature Video series and the complete Star Trek series. (We also offer classes on Conversational Klingon on Friday mornings.) We also have more than 800 scouting titles and can check out to any scout or adult any book (including Merit Badge pamphlets) that are not for sell in the Trading Post, so why not encourage your scouts to curl up with an Atomic Energy Merit Badge book tonight!
BEST LANYARD OF THE WEEK CONTEST- Explained in greater detail in the Honor Unit guidebook, everyone in camp can try to make the best designed lanyard and win points for their troop. Entries should be turned in by Friday morning at 10am.
ASTRONOMY OBSERVATIONS & THE JUPITER CRASH BASH! - On many clear nights on the Basketball Court you can usually find our 484x refractor and 7 inch dobsonian reflector scopes scanning the evening sky looking at the planets and nebulas of our galaxy, come take a look! Don't miss the awesome Jupiter Comet collision in camp this week!
GUEST DEMONSTRATIONS See the Georgia Forestry on parade bus, watch an expert wood sculpture use a chain saw to carve a tree stump into stunning artwork! Talk to scouts around the world on a Ham Radio. We are always bringing interesting guests for special programs at the Fine Arts Center, listen on WBSA for this weeks special guests.
MEDIA DAY - During the week and especially on Mondays we encourage your troop to invite the hometown paper & radio station to come to camp as our guest to record pictures and write articles. Some troops have even arranged for a scout working on Journalism Merit Badge to serve as a "correspondent reporter" for your town paper. Please let the camp director know if you think your local media will be visiting our camp. Once this summer we will have a special media tour of camp.
VIDEO INTERNSHIPS - Each week of camp we need one or two senior scout campers to serve in a unique program to assist the Fine Arts Director in recording and collecting video images of summer camp. We need one or two experienced senior scouts (or adults) who understand the basic operations of a Camcorder and 35mm camera to assist in this project. Scouts selected for the program can even work towards the partial completion of the Cinematography, Photography, and Journalism Merit Badges.
SOSSI DISPLAY - In conjunction with the Scouts on Stamps Society International (SOSSI) there will be a ongoing display of scout stamps from countries around the world located in the trading post. Stop by and get hooked on the great hobby of Stamp Collecting and learn some more about scouting.
COLQUITT TRAIL A camp wide event involving scoutcraft skills and other games & competition stations. This is a major HONOR UNIT EVENT with specific events detailed in the Honor Unit Companion Guidebook.
AWARENESS DAYS - Each day our Department will host a special recognition day for various causes like Alpha Phi Omega, the national scouting service fraternity, Tree Trivia placemat day, the National Eagle Scout Association, World Jamboree, or Provisional Camping for one of the remaining weeks of camp.
SCOUT MANIA The ultimate Trivia Game of Scouting: Better than Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, this is the game that shows who knows the scout handbook best at camp. Win honor unit points and be the top Scouting Maniac in camp. This board game is also for sale at the Camp Trading Post and is the Tuesday Night at 7pm major event in camp.
5..4..3..2..1...BLASTOFF !!! Even if you are not in the Space Exploration class you can't pass up a chance to build and launch your own model rocket, launch times will be announced towards the end of the week based on Weather conditions.
